Scrabble Words with Q and No U: The Complete List
By ScrabbleDict Team · Published on November 3, 2025
If you’ve ever picked a Q out of the Scrabble bag and then watched every U disappear into your opponent’s rack, you know the special kind of dread that follows. The good news: you don’t need a U to play a Q. Several dictionaries — including SOWPODS/Collins Scrabble Words — allow a small but mighty set of Q-without-U words.
Why Q words without U matter
Scrabble’s letter distribution includes just one Q and rewards the player who can dispose of it without eating a big point penalty at the end of the game. Knowing a handful of no-U Q words means you’re never truly stuck holding a dead tile.
Valid Q words with no U (SOWPODS / Collins)
These words are accepted in Scrabble UK (SOWPODS), though most are not valid in TWL/NWL2023 (Scrabble US). Always confirm with the word checker before playing in a specific ruleset.
- QI — a 2-letter word referring to the vital life force in Chinese philosophy. The most useful Q word in the game.
- QAT — a shrub whose leaves are chewed as a stimulant (also spelled KHAT).
- QOPH — a letter of the Hebrew alphabet.
- QANAT — an underground irrigation channel.
- QINDAR — a monetary unit of Albania.
- QINTAR — an alternate spelling of qindar.
- QADI — a Muslim judge.
- QIGONG — the traditional Chinese practice of coordinated movement and breathing (SOWPODS only).
- TRANQ — informal for a tranquilizer (Collins-valid in newer editions).
- SHEQEL — a monetary unit of Israel (alternate spelling of shekel).
The single most important word: QI
If you remember only one word from this list, make it QI. It’s short, it’s a real 2-letter play, and it slots neatly into crossword-style boards to use your Q for minimal risk. In NWL2023/TWL, QI is also valid, making it the one Q-without-U word that works across nearly every dictionary — a rare case where US and international rules agree.
Strategy: what to do if you can’t find a Q word
- Check for QI or QAT first — these are the most commonly playable no-U Q words and often fit into open board positions.
- Hold the Q and wait for a U — sometimes the better play is patience, especially early in the game when more U tiles remain in the bag.
- Use the word finder — plug a Q into our Scrabble Word Finder along with any other letters on your rack to see every valid combination instantly.
- Know your dictionary — SOWPODS players have far more Q-without-U options than TWL/NWL2023 players, so check which ruleset your game uses before assuming a word is valid.
