How to Choose a Dictionary in Scrabble?
The Scrabble game is played all over the world using four dictionaries.
- Scrabble US (TWL)
- Scrabble UK (SOWPODS)
- NASPA (2023)
- Words with Friends (ENABLE)
Below is a short description of each, along with the reason for choosing them.
1. Scrabble US (TWL)
- Players playing the Scrabble board game in the USA, Canada and Thailand use the TWL dictionary (Tournament Word List)
- This TWL dictionary uses American spellings (e.g. COLOR is valid but COLOUS is not)
- The Scrabble US (TWL) dictionary is considered stricter than the international version, with fewer words
2. Scrabble UK (SOWPODS)
- Scrabble UK (SOWPODS) is often called Collins Scrabble Words (CSW). It is an old acronym of two combined lists
- Board players from all over the world (e.g., the UK, Australia, Africa, etc.) use it
- SOWPODS is a larger list and combines all the British and American words
- There are many valid words, such as "ZO," that are considered illegal in the US version
3. NWL2023
- Governed by NASPA Games, the NASPA Word List is an official dictionary for competitive Scrabble in the US and Canada
- It has evolved from the old list, OTCWL (Official Tournament and Club Word List)
- It has removed offensive slurs and added new playable words
- There is another subset called the NASPA School Word List (NSWL), which is for school competitions and ensures words are suitable for younger players
- NASPA is updated regularly (e.g., from NASPA2020 to NASPA2023) to include new words and remove obsolete terms
4. Words with Friends (ENABLE)
- ENABLE stands for Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon
- This list is used by players playing the "Words with Friends" app on their phones
- The app does not use the official Scrabble dictionary. It has its own unique list
- Some words that are valid in Scrabble might not work here, and vice versa
You can also check our "Scrabble word finder," which will help you find words if you are stuck and have either the first word, the last, or the total length.
